Trip Overview

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a remote and adventurous journey that leads to the base of Mount Makalu (8,485m), the world’s fifth-highest mountain. Located in eastern Nepal, the Makalu region is part of the Makalu Barun National Park, known for its rich biodiversity, pristine wilderness, and towering Himalayan peaks.

This trek is perfect for experienced trekkers looking to explore isolated trails, dramatic landscapes, alpine glaciers, and authentic Rai, Sherpa, and Limbu villages. The trail ascends through subtropical forests, rhododendron valleys, and rugged high-altitude terrain, culminating at the spectacular Makalu Base Camp with close-up views of Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Chamlang, and Baruntse.

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is considered challenging due to its remoteness, basic accommodations, and significant altitude gain. It is recommended for trekkers with prior high-altitude experience and good fitness levels. The best seasons are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).
